Spices & Herbs Packaging Machines

Whole spices and dried herbs can behave very differently on a packing line. Peppercorns, seeds and dried chili pieces may flow easily, while oregano, parsley and other leafy herbs are lightweight, irregular and easily broken. These differences affect feeding stability, weighing accuracy, filling speed and the amount of product that fits into each package. Smart Weigh matches the weighing and packing system to the actual product—not just the target weight. Multihead weighers can be integrated with VFFS machines, premade pouch systems or jar filling equipment. Feeder settings, hopper capacity, contact surfaces and discharge timing can be configured for whole spices, leafy herbs and mixed products. Sample testing helps confirm the right setup before the final system is recommended.

Spices & Herbs Packaging Challenges

Differences in particle size, bulk density and product shape can make herbs and spices difficult to feed and weigh consistently. The following challenges should be considered when selecting an automated packing system.

Uneven Feeding

Lightweight herbs can bridge inside the feeder or move unevenly into the weighing hoppers. A standard machine may require stronger vibration, which can create more broken leaves without fully stabilizing the flow. Smart Weigh adjusts the feeder geometry, vibration level and hopper operation around the actual product so it moves into the weighing system more consistently.

Weight Variation

Dense seeds and peppercorns behave differently from light, high-volume herbs. If the weighing range and hopper capacity are not properly matched, the line may produce underweight packages, excessive giveaway or unstable speeds. Smart Weigh selects the weighing configuration, hopper size and combination program according to the product density, target weight and required output.

Blend Separation

Mixed herbs and spice blends may contain ingredients with very different sizes and densities. When all ingredients are placed in one common hopper, heavier pieces can settle while lighter leaves remain near the top, creating an inconsistent blend between packages. For recipes requiring controlled proportions, Smart Weigh can use dedicated weighing sections to measure different ingredients separately before combining them in the same package.

Fines in the Seal

Small seeds, herb fragments and seasoning particles may continue falling after the main portion enters the bag. Material caught between the sealing jaws can cause weak seals, leaks and unnecessary rejects. Smart Weigh coordinates the weighing discharge, product settling time and bag-sealing cycle so the product clears the sealing area before the jaws close.
