A Lower-Investment Packing Line for Four Mixture Candy 2 lb Bags

Does a four-candy mix require four separate weighing channels? Not always.

If each package only needs a relatively even assortment and an accurate total net weight, the four candies can be combined before entering one multihead weigher. This simplifies the packing line and reduces the initial equipment investment.

General Assortment or Fixed Recipe: Define the Requirement First

Four candies in one bag can describe two very different packaging requirements.

The first is a general assortment. All four varieties should be reasonably distributed throughout production, but some variation between individual bags is acceptable.

The second is a controlled recipe. For example, each 2 lb bag may need a specified percentage, weight or number of pieces from every candy variety.

Premixing followed by one multihead weigher can be suitable for a general assortment. It cannot guarantee a fixed recipe.

The 14-head weigher receives the candies as one combined product and controls the total 907 g portion. It does not identify which candy is inside each hopper or correct the amount of an individual variety.

How This Four-Candy Packing Line Works

  1. Each of the four candies is supplied by a separate vibratory feeder.
  2. All four feeders release product simultaneously into one steep-incline conveyor.
  3. The shared conveyor combines the product streams and transfers the candies upward.
  4. One 5 L 14-head multihead weigher portions the mixed product to a total target of 2 lb.
  5. A support platform positions the weigher above the bagger.
  6. The 620 VFFS machine forms, fills and seals the 11.8 in-wide bag.

The four feeders help create a relatively even product stream, but they do not weigh or verify the ratio of the individual candies. Differences in piece size, weight, shape and surface friction can still cause the composition to vary from one bag to another.

The correct description is therefore a relatively even four-candy assortment, not four independently verified portions.

Why This Configuration Costs Less

Once the candies are combined upstream, the line only needs one 14-head weigher, one collection path and one set of weighing controls.

A system designed to measure four products independently may require:

  • A partitioned mixture weigher
  • Several independent weighing sections
  • Multiple product discharge paths
  • Additional collection equipment
  • More recipe controls
  • A larger support platform

The one-weigher configuration offers a practical investment balance when total bag weight is the primary quality requirement and natural variation between candy types is commercially acceptable.

If the amount of every component matters, compare the premixing design with a separately controlled vertical mixed weighing packing system.

Compare the Total Installed Cost, Not Just the Machine Price

The machine price is only one part of a U.S. packaging-line budget. Before comparing proposals, confirm that each quotation covers the same installation scope.

Important items include:

  • Floor space for four feeders and operator access
  • Ceiling clearance for the incline conveyor, platform and weigher
  • Electrical supply and compressed-air requirements
  • Freight, inland delivery and rigging
  • Film specifications and the correct forming set
  • Coding, metal detection or checkweighing
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Operator and maintenance training
  • Recommended spare parts
  • Plant-specific documentation and safety requirements

A simpler weighing section may reduce equipment and integration costs, but the final comparison should be based on the complete installed line.

What to Verify During the Factory Acceptance Test

The Factory Acceptance Test should use all four actual candies and the intended packaging film whenever possible.

Total Net Weight

Record a mutually agreed number of consecutive bags. Report the average, minimum, maximum and number of bags outside the ±2 g total-weight tolerance.

Candy Distribution

Open sample bags and separate the four candy varieties. Weigh or count each group to determine the actual variation between bags.

The purpose is not to claim precise ratio control. It is to determine whether the observed variation is acceptable for the product specification.

Sustained Production Speed

Confirm that the line can maintain approximately 30 bags per minute during a continuous run, not only for a short peak period.

Feeder Stability

Check the output of all four feeders before and after refilling. Changes in product level or flow behavior can affect the mixture.

Product Transfer and Sealing

Check for segregation, bridging, broken candy, product trapped in the seals and incomplete discharge of the 2 lb portion.

Stop-and-Restart Performance

Inspect the first bags produced after stopping and restarting the line. Their candy distribution may differ from that of bags produced under steady-state conditions.

To compare premixing with independent component weighing, provide:

  • Photos and dimensions of all four candies
  • Average piece weight of each candy
  • Required average proportion
  • Acceptable component variation per bag
  • Whether control is based on weight, percentage or piece count
  • Target bag weight and total-weight tolerance
  • Finished bag width and length
  • Film structure
  • Required sustained production speed
  • Available floor space and ceiling height
  • Electrical and compressed-air information
  • Product and film samples for testing

If a relatively even assortment is acceptable, four vibratory feeders and one 14-head weigher may offer the better investment balance. If each bag must meet a defined four-part recipe, use independent component weighing.
